How to clean pendant lamps & chandeliers
The first step when cleaning anything to do with electricity is to make sure the power is off. Turning the light off should be enough but, if you are in any doubt, turn off the circuit at your central fuse box.
You’ll then want to remove the bulb and place it somewhere safe. Whether you’re dealing with a pendant lamp or a chandelier, the best approach is to take the lamp off the fitting and soak all the glasswork in a bowl of warm water.
If it has a lot of debris and dirt then use Care+Protect multi-surface ecological degreaser to remove even the most stubborn grease.
Once it’s washed, wipe the glass over with a soft cloth and make sure it is completely dry. You’ll then be able to wipe the bulb with a damp cloth and dry it thoroughly.
Carefully put the pendant or chandelier back together and re-insert the light bulb. You can take a moment to admire your work before turning the light on.
There are additional tips to be aware of depending on the material your chandelier is made from.
How to clean a plastic chandelier
Plastic chandeliers are more prone to the outer layer tarnishing or even flaking. That’s why, instead of soaking the chandelier to remove the dust and dirt, you need to wipe it all carefully with a damp cloth and avoid using any chemicals.
How to clean a steel chandelier
Steel chandeliers are generally a little more robust. That means they can be washed with soap and water or you can use a dedicated chemical/ metal polisher. This will help to enhance the natural shine of the metal and prevent it from tarnishing due to exposure to the air.
How to clean crystal chandeliers
Crystal chandeliers can be cleaned with warm water and dish soap, as illustrated above. However, to get the best possible shine and remove stubborn dirt, you may prefer to use alcohol.
You’ll need to mix four parts of distilled water with one part of isopropyl alcohol. You can put this in a spray bottle and spray the chandelier in situ, being careful of the electrical wires.
The better option is to do this while the chandelier is off the ceiling. In this instance you don’t need to spray the chandelier, you can simply soak each piece of the chandelier in a bowl of distilled water and alcohol.
How to clean oxidised chandeliers
Chandeliers, especially brass ones, will tarnish because they are exposed to oxygen in the air. This is also known as oxidization. The good news is that this can be dealt with. All you need to do is soak a clean rag in some Multi-Surface Ecological Degreaser. Then, gently rub the chandelier to remove the oxidization and leave your chandelier looking like new.
Chandeliers are excellent additions to any home, with a little attention they can stay looking fantastic for life.
