Taking care of your garments
Have you ever found yourself staring blankly at the many washing symbols on your garments, desperately trying to understand what they mean, only to end up taking chances and hoping your laundry will come out just fine?
Laundry labels might indeed seem like they were written in a foreign language, but they are essential to take good care of your items and make them last for longer. The symbols will tell you everything you need to know about how to do the washing and drying.
If you’re struggling, here’s a brief guide on how to read garments labels to get perfect results.
The wash tub
Choosing the right temperature and wash cycle is the first step to get perfectly clean laundry and prevent damages to your clothes. While consulting the label, look for the wash tub symbols to get all the information you need and to make sure it is safe to put the items in the washing machine. These may present either numbers or dots indicating the recommended maximum temperature: one dot means 30°, two dots 40° and four dots 60°. The icons will also give you instructions about the type of fabric. One line drawn underneath the bucket means you should choose a synthetic cycle, while two lines indicates that you should use a gentle or wool wash cycle.
Instead, a hand drawn inside the wash tub represents hand washing, so make sure to treat your item with delicacy and use the hand wash program on your washing machine.
Look for the square
Here comes the drying part. For most people, this is usually the hardest, so if you don’t know where to start, look for the square symbol on the tag to unveil all the secrets for excellent drying results. A square with a circle means you can safely put your item in your tumble dryer. Inside of this symbol you’ll find what you can consider as your new best friends, the dots. These will suggest you the right setting to use: one dot for low heat, two dots for medium and three for high heat settings, while no dots will give you freedom to choose any heat setting you prefer. As for the washing part, a line below the symbol means you should use the cycle dedicated to synthetic fabric, while two lines indicates the settings for delicate items.
A cross over the symbol means you should not put the item in your tumble dryer, but let it air dry instead.
