During the summer, the fridge is transformed from a simple household appliance into a tremendously helpful part of our daily lives, cooling the food and drinks that give us so much relief during this time of year.
Partly for this reason, it is important to know how to best organise the layout of its content, both as a question of convenience and to ensure the food is kept at its absolutely freshest, whatever time of year it is.
When you’ve got the right sized fridge, with a full range of compartments and drawers – like those in the Hoover collection – this can be made easier than ever before. But you still need to know where to start to get things going.
In this blog, that’s what we’re going to talk about, exploring what the best way to organise your fridge and how Hoover fridges are the perfect appliance for storing your cold food.
Tips and tricks for storing food in your fridge.
- Don’t overfill your fridge
It can be tempting, whenever you go for a food shop, to fill up your fridge with as much as you can so you don’t have to keep heading out for more when stocks run low.
But the truth is, this can cause problems with the cold air in the machine. Cold air needs to move around the fridge easily so that everything remains balanced and chilled. If you’ve got too much stuff in your fridge, this can make it harder to achieve that balance of cold air.
This can also cause problems for energy ratings too – because to compensate the cooler temperatures of a full fridge, you’ll need to lower the temperature further. - Don’t leave the door open
It sounds obvious but leaving the door of your fridge open leaves your food at real risk of being spoiled. It’s also not good for energy efficiency, requiring the fridge to produce more cold air to offset the warm air that comes rushing in.
So while you might be closing your fridge door naturally, always be firm and make sure it actually is closed and not just slightly ajar. - Keep your fruit and vegetables separate
Fruit and vegetables, whatever they are, emit a range of gases like ethylene. The problem is that these gases can have a harmful effect on other foods in your fridge, contaminating them and affecting their freshness.
That’s why it’s important to store them elsewhere in your fridge – ideally in their own dedicated drawers, one for fruit and one for vegetables. - Arrange food carefully
There’s a general rule you can follow to maintain optimum freshness by sorting your food:
Perishable products, like meat, fish and dairy should always go on the shelves in the upper part of the fridge. Semi-cooked meals, like sauces and leftovers from previous meals you’ve made should be tidied away on the central shelves. Fruit and vegetables should go into the drawers at the bottom – as previously mentioned.
Finally, you can put eggs, butter and drinks in the door’s compartments. - Regularly clean your fridge
You might do this already but keeping your fridge clean and in tip-top shape is a very good way to avoid cross-contamination with residual food that you’ve previously stored.
It’s also a good way to stay on top of food that has gone off without you noticing, ensuring you’re one step ahead of any mould or errant gases that can cause problems for your family. - Store your meat in bags
Uncooked meat can contain harmful bacteria that, if it gets in your other food, can pose a serious health risk to your household.
To avoid this, make sure your meat is safely stored in zipped fridge bags to prevent leakages. Make sure that you clearly mark the bags, specifying the type of meat and the date of purchase.
