There are many ways of caring for our minds and bodies. One of these - very popular in recent years - is the sauna, perfect in all its variants for improving cardiovascular function, eliminating stress and purifying our bodies by removing waste and toxins .... especially as winter approaches!
But what is a sauna really? Generally, a sauna is any treatment involving high temperatures in an enclosed room, the most famous types of which are certainly the Finnish (dry) and Turkish (humid) varieties. A Finnish sauna is a room made from wood containing stones heated to 90 degrees, while a Turkish one is traditionally a room lined with marble with vents emitting steam into the interior (with lower temperatures than the Finnish type). Regardless of type, a sauna offers many benefits. Let’s discover them together!
- When combined with a healthy, balanced diet, a sauna is a way of losing weight. The increase in heart rate caused by the heat helps the body to burn more calories (about 300, the equivalent of walking for one hour).
- A sauna purifies the body, removing waste and surplus toxins through perspiration.
- The heat of the sauna helps to relax the muscles and disperse lactic acid, making it ideal after sport or exercise.
- The sauna is good for the mind as well as the body. Since it helps us to relax, a sauna reduces stress levels and helps to combat insomnia.
- The heat of the sauna dilates the pores, enabling the skin to shed dead cells and impurities.
- The sauna strengthens the immune system, eliminating the bacteria which cause infections and preventing the onset of fever (very common at this time of year) by regulating the body temperature.
- The transitions between hot and cold temperatures during a sauna session help to keep the cardiovascular system active.
