Every year, on 16th October, World Food Day is celebrated all over the world. The day was created to commemorate the anniversary of the founding date of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (otherwise known as FAO) established in Canada..
Since 1981, World Food Day has revolved around a different theme, and this year they have decided to turn the spotlight on healthy and sustainable diets in order to raise public awareness about the rise of obesity and excess weight around the world. 820 million people suffer from hunger, but even more people suffer from these nutrition problems.
Want some numbers? Over 670 million adults and 120 million young people between the ages of 5 and 19 are obese, while over 40 million children are overweight. This phenomenon can no longer be ignored, especially given the costs involved (it would take an estimated 2 trillion dollars to treat disorders related to obesity) and environmental damage caused by this type of food system, which is leading to rapid disappearance of biodiversity.
It is therefore important to educate people on the damage caused by these disorders and on the benefits – both for their own health and for the planet – of a balanced and ecologically sustainable diet. A healthy diet helps build, strengthen and preserve the body, as well as providing the daily energy that is essential for the body to function properly. Proper nutrition is therefore crucial for healthy physical development starting from childhood, and includes – among other things – fruit, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains, as well as foods that are low in fat, sugar and salt.
